It can play the role of coenzyme role in a multi-enzyme system that is responsible for catalyzing the acyl transfer effect in the reaction of oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate into acetate and oxidative decarboxylation reaction of α-ketoglutarate into succinic acid.
